Richard Thornton Obituary

Richard Lee Thornton, age 68, of Parkville, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. He was born in Pearisburg, Virginia to parents Calvin H.A. Thornton and Atchie Clark Thornton.  He was raised in Lindside, West Virginia and graduated from Peterstown High School in 1973.  After graduation, he left Lindside and moved to Maryland, eventually settling in Baltimore.  He was a natural athlete who enjoyed golf, softball, fishing, the Ravens, the Orioles, and playing cornhole and horseshoes.  He was a kind and generous man who always greeted people with a smile and a friendly word.  He had a great sense of humor and brought fun and laughter to any gathering.  He will be remembered for his silly jokes, listening ear, and consistent desire to put others first. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Calvin and Atchie, sister Lula Belle Palmer, and mother-in-law Sis Muth.  He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Betty Thornton; daughter Heather Ford (Tom); his son Austin Zang (Candace); and grandchildren Trent Sheesley, Amelia Zang, Greyson Zang, Aidan Ford, Bryce Ford and Teresa Ford; his siblings Scott Thornton (Linda), Charles Thornton (Cindy), Sandra Martin (Tony), and John Thornton; his father-in-law Theodore Muth, brother-in-law Butch Muth (Louise), and brother-in-law Roger Palmer; nieces and nephews: Mike Palmer, Greg Palmer (deceased), Melanie Neal, Warren Thornton, Tilden Thornton, Makayla Lester, Martha Hach, Rachel Fisher, Tim Thornton, Amber Perdue, Chelsey Allen, Ryan Thornton, and Chari Taber; as well as many beloved cousins, great-nieces and nephews and special friends. 

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Hiss United Methodist Church; 8700 Harford Road, Parkville, MD 21234.
