Joseph Regis Smith Obituary
Joseph Regis Smith, known to most as “Regis,” passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, at the age of 75.
Born on August 22, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, Regis was the son of the late Regis Oliver Smith and Lillian Mae (Belt) Smith. He is survived by his sister, Joan Jones (John), and niece, Casey Carnes.
He is survived by his children: Noelle Althoff (Timothy), Courtney Gonce (David), Ashley Gelormino (Gino), and Eric Smith (Colby). He was a proud grandfather to Devin Althoff (Makenzie), Corey and Lily Althoff; Eli and Sadie Gonce; Arianna and Adelina Gelormino; and Clay Regis Smith, who proudly carries on the family name.
Regis also remained closely connected to Patricia Smith, the mother of his children, as they continued sharing family milestones, holidays, and special moments throughout the years.
Regis proudly served as a Lieutenant with the Baltimore City Fire Department for 27 years, dedicating his career to serving others and his community. Outside of work, he was the life of the party. He loved crabbing, fishing, hunting, gardening, antiquing, and collecting unique bottles of liquor. He enjoyed sharing stories over a cigarette and a beer with family and friends and had a way of making people feel welcome, often starting his sentence with “Hi hon” or ending with “yes ma’am.” He also never passed up ice cream, potato chips or a cold soda.
Though Regis faced many difficult mental health struggles throughout the later years of his life, he continued to find joy in the simple things he loved, and in his family who he loved most. His presence, humor, stories, and unmistakable personality will be deeply missed.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at A Caring Place in Parkville, Maryland, whose kindness and compassion brought comfort and companionship to Regis over the last several years. Their support meant more to our family than words can fully express.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Regis’s life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Columbus Gardens, 4301 Klosterman Avenue, Nottingham, Maryland.
