John Iverson Burkhead, Sr.

April 30, 1933 – June 10, 2026

John Iverson Burkhead passed away on June 10, 2026, at the age of 93.  He was the second of ten children born to the late LeRoy Nathaniel Burkhead, Sr. and the late Catherine Venetta Moon.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Frances Maria (Mangano) Burkhead, Daughter Maria Rosier (James), Son John Burkhead, Jr. (Vera), Grandchildren Collin Stewart, Jillian Rosier (Morgan), Micah Stewart (Lauren), Jimmy Rosier II, Zack Bennett (Tommie Lynn), Cameron Burkhead, Isabella Rush (Cody), Great-grandchildren Addison and Mason Anias, and Wednesday Bennett.  Treasured brother of Robert Burkhead (Sandra), Catherine Joy (late Robert), Patricia Green (Bluett), Douglas Burkhead (Leslie), the late LeRoy Burkhead (late Anne), the late Ronald Burkhead (Shirley), the late Ralph Burkhead (late Rose), the late James Burkhead, and the late Raymond Burkhead.  Also survived by lots of extended family and friends.

John grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Kenwood High School.  He joined the Navy and served his country from 1952-1956.  He was an aviation machinist/tech and a squadron captain.  He enjoyed boxing for the Navy.  He earned a National Defense Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.  After the Navy, he worked for Martin State Airport, Otis Elevator, and General Elevator in Construction/Maintenance/Modernization, etc.  After 38 years, he retired in 1998 and is a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 7.  John met Fran in 1959, and they married on June 17, 1961, enjoying a long life together.  He was a wonderful man, loved and respected by everyone.  In addition, he was an avid sports fan; watching the Colts/Ravens, O’s, and especially boxing.
