John DePrine Obituary

John Louis DePrine, 95, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024 at the Broadmead Retirement Community where he was a resident for 13 years. He is survived by five nieces and one nephew, Carole Gienapp (Walter), Jeanne Williams (Vic), Janet Johnson (George), Edward DePrine, Jr, Wendy Mancini (John) and Laurie Collidge (Qasim), 18 great nieces and nephews and many great great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was his dear lifelong friend, Robert S. Gist, his parents: Claude D. DePrine, Sr. and Annie L. DePrine (nee: Bauer), his brothers and sisters: William B. DePrine (Margaret), Evelyn B. Hook (William), Marion D. Boesl, Claude D. DePrine, Jr. (Grace), Audrey M. Luckart (Martin), his identical twin, Edward E. DePrine, Sr. (Betty), his nephews: John A Boesl, Jr., Claude D. DePrine, III, and niece: Susan D. Hansen.

John was born and raised in Baltimore. While he left high school early due to illness, he was proud of the fact that he became the first of his family to attend college. He studied design and education at the Maryland Institute College of Art and earned a Master’s degree in Education at Towson University. He was an art educator in the Baltimore County school system, having taught in Sparrows Point High School, Loch Raven Junior High, Old Court Junior High, and Loch Raven Senior High School. He also set up and headed the art departments at Loch Raven Junior and Senior High Schools.

John loved the theater and liked to write plays, some of which have been published. For a time, he was a member of the Woodbrook Players.

He will be remembered for his keen sense of wit, his love for parties, the stories he would gladly tell to those who would listen, and for the laughter he brought into so many lives. He will be sorely missed by his nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Buzzy”, and also by the staff at Broadmead who were thanking him for being so kind up to the end.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Broadmead Community Center, 13801York Rd.; Cockeysville, MD 21030. Family will receive guests starting at 12:30 p.m..
